Visual and Infrared Remote Sensing, Active Remote Sensing (microwave, radar, lidar), planetary atmospheres, the physics of the space environment (ionosphere, magnetosphere, solar wind), use of MATLAB in space science studies. Graduate Student Research Assistant (September 1998 through June 2000) Worked with a group of scientists gathering, organizing, analyzing, and displaying data in accordance with research projects. Selected Accomplishments: Researched for and retrieved scientific data from the magnetosphere over the internet. Designed, developed, and implemented FORTRAN/IDL codes to analyze/display the data using 2D contour plots of time distribution of spline fit. Produced and posted summary GIF plots on the Web using HTML for collaborative usage: http://maggy.engin.umich.edu/mist/ml.html On-site servicing of remote autonomous science station on the Greenland ice cap, April 1999.
Work & Experience
Worked on satellite data management systems maintenance/upgrade projects for atmospheric science applications (Earth’s radiation budget). Worked on data production project to create a new set of corrected binary data products from satellite telemetry data, focusing on the last step of creating science products and plotting them so as to validate the process. Rewrote, recompiled, tested, and validated existing codes and created new ones (in FORTRAN 77/90, C-shell, and IDL) to read, analyze, and display (plot/map) data according to scientist’s specifications. Also did the same (plus C-shell to Perl conversion) in order to upgrade existing data processing systems to work on new production platforms (IBM P4/P6, Intel x86_64), with new tools (i.e. Sun Grid Engine), compilers, toolkits, libraries, directory structures, data sources, and making the resulting necessary updates to the system's documentation as well as production request templates. In addition, was responsible for submitting all such requests for initially 2, then 8, subsystems, and the related testing and evaluation of the web interface for the new online versions of the production request database. Assisted with resolving problems encountered during the process from software validation to production.
